Yep December in 1983….I took 2 of my 3 girls to see Christmas Story at the Dayton Mall in Dayton, Ohio….I can still here Santa saying Ho Ho Ho as he bumped poor Ralphies forehead with his foot sending Ralphie down the slide….good old Red Rider BB gun story and a “Family Entertaining Movie”….Yeah those were the days….So what’s a kid Ralphies age today want from Santa?
My buddy Waylon Padget is about the same age. Maybe Santa “Dan” would enlighten me??? As for girls….I know what they want….THE CREDIT CARD….Mom & Granny taught them well….at least in my household. Ya wanna see time fly? Go charge something 90 days same as ca$h.
Here’s a school (not fish) of Christmas Shopping anglers pictured below that enjoyed themselves at Brooker Bait & Tackle’s 6th Annual Sale on Dec 3rd. FFC President Randy Disanto said there were not only anglers from the FFC, but also had members of Tri-County Fly Fishers & Lady Fly Fishing Club attend. Good to see everyone support a local business….of course Brooker added a little incentive called a “Free BBQ Lunch” that was delicious. Bill Brooker wanted to thank everyone for their generous support making this year better than ever. And yes that is Shaw Grigsby in the tournament shirt.
As for some fishing reports whether your trapesing around a pond or within a few hours drive, they have been hit or miss….mostly miss. Here’s VP Rob Husson with a HIT showing off a Villages Calumet Pond bass that on the scales weighed 5 lbs even. Rob caught his fish on his “favorite bait” called a watermelon red flake colored Yum Dinger.
Don Millich & I went to Lake Harris Dec 1. We concentrated on the south end of Little Lake Harris catching 7 bass covering the 70 deg water quickly with hopes of snagging something. Millich, in his typical fashion, shows me how it’s done on a worm that appeared to be junebug color. I, on the other hand, was catching a few on a white spinnerbait with a chartreuse grub trailer….I know, old school lure.
Octobers FFC meeting raffled 2 trips to fish with guide Captain Grady Maynard from Brooker Bait & Tackle. Here’s Lud holding 1 of 20 bass he & other winning angler Larry Trout caught with Capt Grady recently. Lud said “they’d caught 2 that exceeded 7 lbs and that they’d learned a thing about bass fishing with wild shiners….what a hoot.”
While talking to Elite Angler Mark Menendez at Brooker Bait & Tackle sale on Dec 3rd, Mark asked me if I’d tried or seen these baits? I said know. He went on to say that they’re the hottest thing going for a big fish bite. I bought 2. You can never have enough
shoes lures. Gal thing in my house with the shoes. If I remember I’ll post it on here my 1st catch. Mark said throw it on braid….cast it out & crank it in. EZ enough….stay tuned.
- FISH OF THE WEEK
FFC member Bob Knorr headed to Miami to visit over Thanksgiving. Bob said he and his brother fished the canals in Miami for peacock bass and had a blast. They ate Boy Howdy lures with crazy aggression. If you’ve ever seen fishing shows featuring Peacock Bass, you know how vicious they can be when striking a topwater lure. I wish they’d acclimate themselves farther north but that’ll never happen. They’re like a manatee & can’t handle the cold. Sounds like many folks I know including myself. Gorgeous fish Bob.
NOTE: Picture was added 2 hours after posting this trip. Lets go NOW! 🙂Trip Chairman Steve Felix says December 19, 2016 fishing trip is out of Venetian Gardens on Lake Harris. Refer to the banner at the top of the web page under MEETINGS/EVENTS for details. Deadline to sign up Dec 16, 2016.
Don’t forget to attend our next FFC meeting Dec 13 at Lake Miona Rec Center featuring 9 time Bassmaster Classic contender & Elite Angler Bernie Schultz.
